Build your business / PRACTICAL UK GUIDE

Build an audience people want to hear from

Useful product advice, clear signup choices and a sensible publishing routine create reasons to return.

01

Choose a question your customer already has

Show how the product fits, how to choose a size, what arrives in the parcel or how to care for it. Use honest photographs and examples. A short demonstration can do more than a page of generic claims. Make the next step obvious and keep the promise aligned with the actual product. Avoid invented customer stories, reviews or scarcity.

02

Give visitors a useful reason to return

Publish practical updates relevant to the audience you serve: a genuine restock, a new design, a helpful guide or a change that affects their order. Keep dates and sources visible where facts change. Maintain the pages customers use rather than publishing endless repetitive articles. Search visibility depends on usefulness, competition and many other factors; no content checklist can guarantee first place.

03

Check the rules before emailing a list

UK electronic marketing rules distinguish individual subscribers, including sole traders and some partnerships, from corporate subscribers. Consent or an applicable exemption may be needed, and personal-data obligations can still apply to business contacts. Purchased lists and public email addresses are not a blanket permission to send marketing. Use the current ICO guidance for your actual audience and circumstances, identify your business and provide a working opt-out. The ICO notes parts of its guidance are under review following legislation changes.

04

Measure a real outcome

Choose a small set of outcomes such as completed orders, useful enquiries, repeat customers or confirmed newsletter subscriptions. A view count alone does not show whether the content helps. Keep commercial relationships clear when recommending a service. If you introduce analytics or email capture, update privacy information and any necessary consent controls to match what you actually collect. Start with a schedule you can keep and improve based on real questions from customers.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Make the next move a clearer one.

  • Answer a specific customer question with original examples.
  • Use honest product imagery and current information.
  • Check consent, exemptions and personal-data rules.
  • Identify the sender and honour opt-outs.
  • Measure useful outcomes and disclose commercial links.
