Build your business / PRACTICAL UK GUIDE

Start selling with the basics in place

Pick a manageable first channel, understand your responsibilities and build a routine you can maintain.

01

Choose a structure for your circumstances

Sole traders and limited companies have different registration, reporting and responsibility rules. A sole trader is personally responsible for business debts; a company is a separate legal entity with ongoing duties. Choose with appropriate advice rather than assuming incorporation is always cheapest or removes every personal risk. Check licences, permissions and product requirements that apply to the activity you actually plan to run.

02

Test one product and one selling route

Start with a small set of products, a supplier you have checked and a channel that accepts your business and category. Prepare clear photos and accurate descriptions. Check the marketplace fee model, returns process and fulfilment rules. Your own website and a marketplace offer different ways to reach customers: a new shop does not automatically bring traffic. Keep the first version simple enough that you can follow an order from purchase to payout.

03

Separate the records from day one

Choose an appropriate account for business use and make sure its eligibility and terms fit your structure. Keep sales, expenses, stock information and platform reports organised. Decide whether you need bookkeeping support, an accountant, software or a combination. Budget for insurance and professional help where relevant, alongside products and promotion. Assign a named person to every filing and renewal.

04

Plan a repeatable week

Set time aside to review orders, cash, overdue payments and customer issues. Use a short checklist for listing quality and dispatch. Compare actual fees and margins with the launch estimate. Review source-dated marketplace updates for the channels you use. When a new problem appears, ask a specific question with enough context for useful advice, while keeping private customer and financial data out of a public discussion. Expand when the routine works, not simply because another platform exists.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Make the next move a clearer one.

  • Check structure, registration and activity-specific requirements.
  • Test a small product range on an eligible channel.
  • Keep business money and evidence organised.
  • Assign deadlines and prepare a realistic cash plan.
  • Review actual orders before expanding.
