Selling connected tech? Check the patents before the product launch.

The UK Intellectual Property Office has announced plans to make licensing for patents built into technical standards clearer. This matters most if you develop, brand or import connected products—not if you simply resell ordinary stock.

Ask who is responsible for technology licensing before placing a large connected-product order.

THE SOURCED NEWS

What has the government announced?

The Intellectual Property Office published its response on Standard Essential Patents on 13 October. These patents protect technology that products may need to follow a standard, including features used in smartphones, Wi‑Fi, connected vehicles and advanced manufacturing.

Planned measures include practical licensing guidance, better access to patent information, support for earlier dispute resolution and further work on a possible opinion service for fair licensing terms. The announcement does not create a new seller fee, set a commencement date or guarantee that a product is clear to sell.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

SellerBundle: work out where you sit in the chain

A marketplace reseller buying established UK stock is in a different position from a business importing a white-label Wi‑Fi device, adding its own brand or commissioning new hardware. Before ordering, ask the supplier who designed the product, who owns the software and who is responsible for patent and other intellectual-property permissions.

Keep the supplier’s written answers, product identifiers, test documents and invoices together. If the answer is vague, pause the large order. A low unit price can become expensive when a listing is removed, stock cannot be sold or a dispute needs professional help.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

Treat the announcement as a signpost

The government says more guidance and technical work will follow. That can help businesses understand the system, but it is not a substitute for product-specific legal advice. Watch the IPO resource hub and any future call for evidence rather than copying a licence assumption from another seller.

For a new connected product, begin with a small test order and calculate the full landed cost. Allow for samples, compliance checks, returns and specialist advice where needed. Our tools can organise costs and cash timing, but they cannot confirm patent rights or product compliance.
