Build a repeatable way to verify unusual payment requests, especially when they arrive through social messages.
THE SOURCED NEWS
What the NCA reported
The NCA says law-enforcement and technology partners coordinated work against fraud infrastructure targeting people in the UK and elsewhere. The operation involved activity during and before a London event held on 6–9 October, with the results published on 13 October.
Its warning signs include promises of guaranteed investment returns, pressure to act and demands for fees before money can be withdrawn. The article links to Report Fraud for people who think they have been affected. Suspected arrests are not convictions.
SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS
SellerBundle: put a pause into unusual payments
For a seller, an ordinary-looking profile or familiar logo is not enough to verify who is asking for money. If a supplier changes bank details, use contact information you already hold to check the request independently. Avoid relying only on the phone number or link in the message requesting the change.
Check an order or payment by opening the relevant platform or banking service through your usual route. Keep the transaction reference, invoice and relevant messages together. A screenshot can support a record, but should not be your only evidence that a payment has reached the account.
SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS
Write a short process everyone can follow
Agree who checks a changed payment destination and who can approve an unusual payment. Keep passwords and verification codes private, and explain that urgent social messages do not replace the normal check. For a one-person shop, a short written checklist can still make the process more consistent.
If something has already gone wrong, contact the relevant payment provider promptly through its verified channel and use the official reporting route appropriate to the incident. Keep the evidence. Our safer-payments guide helps organise these habits; it cannot guarantee recovery or establish that a particular person is genuine.
