Microsoft software under review: know what you pay for before renewing.

The CMA opened a consultation on 16 October on its proposal to give Microsoft strategic market status in business software. This is a provisional step, not a final designation or an immediate price cut. Businesses can use the moment to check subscriptions and the practical cost of switching.

THE SOURCED NEWS

What happened on 16 October?

The Competition and Markets Authority is consulting on a proposed strategic market status designation for Microsoft’s business-software ecosystem. It is considering areas for possible future action, including software bundling and how other products can work with Microsoft’s services.

The findings are provisional. Designation would not itself establish wrongdoing. Comments are invited by 5pm UK time on 13 November 2026, with a final decision due by 13 February 2027. Today’s announcement does not change your subscription price or promise a refund.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

SellerBundle: give your software bill a once-over

Make a short list of the tools you actually use for email, documents, customer records and accounts. Put the monthly or annual charge, number of paid users, renewal date and cancellation notice alongside each one. Check whether an old staff account or unused extra is still on the bill.

Then map the important connections. Which app holds the master customer list? Where are invoices saved? Can a replacement open your existing files and keep the integrations you rely on? A lower headline price is only useful if the day-to-day work still gets done.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

Try an export before committing to a move

Use a small, non-sensitive sample to check the export format, attachments and file layout. Estimate the time needed to move and check records. Keep current access and backups while you evaluate the result; do not cancel a working service just to test whether you can leave it.

If you respond to the CMA, describe a specific experience with dates and costs. Follow the consultation’s confidentiality instructions rather than sending customer records. Keep confirmed renewal payments in your cash plan and treat possible regulatory changes as future developments, not savings already earned.
