Shopify VAT: check where the order will actually ship from.

Shopify’s 23 October update bases VAT on the fulfilment location selected by order routing. For orders above £135 before tax and shipping, a single location outside the UK means import treatment and no VAT charged at checkout. Orders at or below £135, Northern Ireland orders and existing orders are unaffected by this change.

Check routing and real checkout results; a UK store address alone does not establish where an order is fulfilled.

THE SOURCED NEWS

A location check, rather than a new VAT rate

Shopify says the change applies to orders shipping to Great Britain and reflects the location selected for the order. Its help guide says split-location orders can be handled differently. Treat this as guidance about Shopify’s calculation, not a statement that tax disappears when checkout does not collect it.

The guide recommends a checkout test for an order above £135, because a draft order might not have a fulfilment location assigned when tax is calculated. It also says moving an existing order to another location does not recalculate its VAT.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

SellerBundle: choose a few orders you can explain

List which locations genuinely hold your stock and which products are assigned to them. Check what happens when a UK location cannot supply every item. Keep the actual stock position separate from the address used for general store details.

Use your normal test process to compare the selected location, destination, pre-tax item value and checkout result. Include a straightforward UK-stock example and any overseas-stock route you actually use. Record split orders as a separate case rather than assuming the same result.

SELLERBUNDLE PRACTICAL ANALYSIS

Resolve a mismatch before changing the rules

If the result looks wrong, gather the order details without customer-sensitive information and compare them with the current help guide. Ask your accountant or tax adviser about the tax treatment of the actual transaction when needed.

Make routing reflect real fulfilment arrangements. Do not move an order on paper simply to produce a preferred tax result. Recheck the customer’s total and your order records after any configuration correction, then save the outcome for the next review.
